ECDE Teachers Join KPSEA Invigilation 2026: What Deployed Teachers and Centre Managers Should Do
Registered Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers employed by county governments are being contracted to invigilate the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) in areas facing shortages. If you have been deployed, confirm your appointment letter, attend your briefing, and treat the same security and integrity rules as every other contracted professional.

What this means. KPSEA has the largest candidature among this year’s national assessments — about 1.38 million learners — and KNEC is engaging 342,005 contracted professionals nationwide. Where primary and junior school invigilators are short, especially in remote or densely populated sub-counties, registered county-employed ECDE teachers fill the gap. The deployment is targeted, not a blanket posting to every centre. Confirm the latest candidature figures through KNEC’s official channels if you need them for planning.
Who is eligible and how deployment works
Turning up at a centre without a formal appointment does not make you an invigilator.
Only registered, county-employed ECDE teachers who are formally deployed may serve.
- Who qualifies — only registered ECDE teachers employed by county governments. Private school ECDE staff and teachers who are not on a county payroll are outside this lane.
- Where you serve — shortage areas only. Sub-counties that cannot fill KPSEA invigilation posts may seek help through the channels set out in the TSC circular, including writing to KNEC at [email protected] with the reason.
- Same rules — contracted ECDE teachers must meet the same examination security, professional conduct and integrity requirements as other authorised personnel.
- Structure — you work under the centre manager and supervisor. Regular KPSEA supervisors remain serving primary school teachers with the experience set out in the circular; ECDE teachers plug invigilation gaps inside that structure.
- Dates — KPSEA rehearsal is Friday 23 October 2026; written papers run Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 October. Know your reporting day and centre before the rehearsal.
What to do in the exam room
Young candidates need calm guidance; the rules are still strict.
In the exam room: badge and letter ready, shade OMR circles, phones locked outside.
- Identification — wear your KNEC badge and carry your national ID and appointment letter every day. Without them you may be treated as unauthorised.
- Position — invigilators may stand at the back of the classroom while candidates work. Do not hover over desks or coach answers.
- OMR sheets — candidates must shade the circles, not cross them. If a learner cannot shade, answers go on the question paper and the supervisor staples the OMR sheet to it before return.
- Absentees and papers — mark absentees AB on the nominal roll and return documents; do not detach their counterfoils; return unused and absent scripts to the container, not to the school office.
- Phones and visitors — phones and visitors’ books stay in a lockable desk outside the room. Authorised people include the centre manager, supervisors, invigilators, cooks, gatekeepers and KNEC monitors — not the director, BOM chair, bursar or unauthorised teachers.
- Reporting — for emergencies in the exam period call the KNEC call centre on 0800 721 410 or 0800 724 900; IPOA’s toll-free line is 1559.
What this is not. This is not a general open call for every ECDE teacher to invigilate KPSEA, and it is not a change to who may supervise KPSEA or run KCSE and KJSEA centres. It does not replace CP2 deployment for TSC teachers already nominated as centre managers, supervisors or invigilators. It is also not permission to enter an exam compound without a letter.
Checklist for deployed ECDE teachers and centre managers
Use this list before rehearsal day.
Deployed ECDE teacher and centre manager checklist for KPSEA 2026.
- Confirm you are on the county ECDE payroll and formally contracted for a named KPSEA centre.
- Download or collect your appointment letter; print a spare copy.
- Attend the KNEC sensitisation for your role; do not send a proxy.
- Pack national ID, KNEC badge and letter for every session from 23 to 28 October.
- Practise the OMR “shade, don’t cross” instruction so you can remind Grade 6 candidates calmly.
- Centre managers: brief ECDE invigilators on sitting plans, counterfoil timing and who may enter the compound.
- Keep this file separate from ordinary county ECDE duty rosters and school fee records.
- Refuse anyone selling forged appointment letters, fake KNEC badges, or paid shortcuts into an exam centre.
Next step. Today, if you have been contacted for KPSEA invigilation, confirm your letter and briefing date in writing; if your sub-county is short of invigilators, escalate through the TSC circular route to KNEC before 23 October, and pin the call-centre numbers on the staff notice board.
