Grade 10 SBA Scores Due 23 October 2026, Keep Evidence Six Months: What Principals and Teachers Should Do

Senior school principals and Grade 10 subject teachers have until Friday 23 October 2026 to upload Grade 10 School-Based Assessment (SBA) written-test scores on the KNEC CBA portal, with projects and practicals due by 31 October. KNEC has also directed schools to keep all SBA work and evidence for at least six months after the upload deadline.

Shupavu Education Desk · 16 October 2026

What this means. These are the first senior school SBA written tests for the pioneer CBE cohort, and Grade 10 SBA counts for 15% of each learner's overall score at the end of Grade 12. The tools have been on the portal since 5 October. Term 3 closes on 24 October and Mashujaa Day falls on Tuesday 20 October, so the working window is shorter than the calendar suggests.

The two deadlines to track

Written tests and projects upload on separate dates.

Grade 10 written-test scores are due by 23 October; projects and practicals by 31 October.

  • Written tests — scores for all 17 subjects are due by Friday 23 October 2026. STEM: Core Mathematics, Essential Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Studies, Home Science, Agriculture and Electricity. Social Sciences: CRE, HRE, IRE, Business Studies, History and Citizenship, and Geography. Arts and Sports: Sports and Recreation, and Music and Dance.
  • Projects and practicals — Grade 10 and Vocational Level projects, available since 2 July, must be uploaded by 31 October 2026.
  • One portal — both go to cba.knec.ac.ke. Log in with the school username and password; a one-time code goes to the registered phone. Fix password problems now, not on the 23rd.
  • Who does what — the principal downloads the tools and is responsible for every learner being assessed, scored and uploaded. Subject teachers administer the tests, score them and upload the results.
  • Colour tools — tools with colour images must be printed in colour or loaded on the school's digital devices.

Scoring without shortcuts

Every mark entered must come from a learner's actual work.

  • Use KNEC tools only — score with the official tools and rubrics, and follow the step-by-step user manual on the CBA portal.
  • No filled marks — over-awarding or uploading scores not based on learners' work is treated as malpractice and attracts administrative action under the KNEC Act.

Keeping evidence for six months

Scripts, rubrics and portfolios now stay in school well past closing day.

Label, store and back up all SBA evidence until at least the end of April 2027.

  • The rule — in an October 2026 circular, KNEC directed schools to keep SBA work and supporting evidence for at least six months from the score-upload deadline. It covers senior school and Vocational Level assessments. Confirm the circular on the CBA portal or with your Sub-County Director's office.
  • What to keep — test scripts, answer sheets, scoring sheets, completed rubrics, project reports, observation and teamwork records, portfolios, photos, videos, audio, and models or artefacts where practical.
  • How to store it — label it, store it securely, back it up, and protect it from loss, damage or alteration. Learner photos, videos and records are confidential and must be handled under data-protection rules.
  • Do not destroy — nothing may be deleted or altered before the period ends, or while any verification or investigation is ongoing. Failing to keep or produce evidence may attract administrative action.
  • Rough end dates — six months runs to about 23 April 2027 for written tests and about 30 April 2027 for projects. Keep everything until at least the end of April 2027.

What this is not. This is not the fake SBA circular KNEC flagged on 13 October, which told schools to stop parallel termly exams. It is not the Grades 3, 5, 7 and 8 SBA or the KPSEA and KJSEA project uploads, and it is not a deadline extension.

Checklist for principals and Grade 10 teachers

Work through this list before the end of next week.

Grade 10 SBA checklist for principals and subject teachers.

  • Log in to cba.knec.ac.ke today and confirm the one-time code reaches the school's registered phone.
  • List every Grade 10 written-test subject the school offers and mark each as uploaded or pending.
  • Set an internal hand-in date of Monday 19 or Wednesday 21 October for scored sheets, since Tuesday 20 is Mashujaa Day.
  • Upload all written-test scores by 23 October, and check project and practical uploads separately for 31 October.
  • Open an evidence folder per subject, labelled with learner name, assessment number, subject and task, and back up digital files in two places.
  • Brief all SBA teachers that no scripts, portfolios or models are discarded before the end of April 2027.
  • Tell Grade 10 parents that SBA counts toward the Grade 12 result and that projects and models stay in school.
  • Keep this file separate from ordinary staff circulars, fee notices and WhatsApp forwards so the SBA records stay easy to find.
  • Refuse anyone selling ready-made SBA scores, forged tools, brokers or paid shortcuts into the portal.

Next step. Today, log in to cba.knec.ac.ke, confirm the code reaches the school phone, list which Grade 10 written-test subjects are still pending, and give every subject teacher a firm date before 23 October to hand in scored sheets.
