KCSE 2026 Rehearsal on 16 October, Practicals from 19 October: What Candidates and Parents Should Do

KCSE 2026 begins with a rehearsal day on Friday 16 October 2026, and oral and practical papers start on Monday 19 October. Every Form Four candidate should attend the rehearsal at their own centre, confirm their index number and subjects, and know exactly which practical or oral sessions fall in the first two weeks.

What this means. The rehearsal is not a paper, but it is the day candidates learn the room, the seating, the rules and the timings they will follow until 20 November. Missing it means meeting those rules for the first time under exam pressure. Candidates taking languages, music, sign language or home science have papers in the very first week, so their preparation window is now days, not weeks.

The KCSE 2026 calendar at a glance

The season runs in three blocks, from rehearsal day to the last written paper on 20 November.

KCSE 2026 runs from rehearsal day on 16 October to the last written paper on 20 November.

  • Rehearsal day — Friday 16 October 2026, for all KCSE candidates at their registered centres.
  • Low-candidature papers — Monday 19 October to Friday 30 October, covering orals, practicals and smaller subjects.
  • Large-candidature papers — Monday 2 November to Friday 20 November, covering the main written papers.
  • Scale — 3,634,846 candidates are registered across KNEC's national exams and assessments this season. For KCSE alone, 10,765 centre managers, 12,274 supervisors, 57,432 invigilators and 21,388 security officers are to be deployed.

Orals and practicals in the first fortnight

These candidates sit papers before the main written papers begin, so they should check their sessions first.

Orals and practicals open the exam season from Monday 19 October.

  • French and German orals — Monday 19 to Friday 23 October, 15 minutes per candidate.
  • Kenyan Sign Language practical signing and Music practical — in the same 19 to 23 October window.
  • Arabic oral — Monday 19 to Monday 26 October, 15 minutes per candidate.
  • Home Science (Foods and Nutrition) planning session — Wednesday 21 October.
  • French written paper 1 — Wednesday 28 October from 8.00 a.m.

Your school sets the exact slot for each oral or practical candidate inside these windows. Ask for it in writing on rehearsal day.

Timing rules that apply to every paper

The same timing rules apply from the first paper to the last.

  • Arrive early — be searched outside the room and seated 15 minutes before the paper starts.
  • Two sessions — the first session starts at 8.00 a.m. and the second at 2.00 p.m.
  • Lateness — a late candidate must give the supervisor a satisfactory reason, and only in exceptional cases will a paper be given to anyone more than half an hour late.
  • Check the paper — confirm the subject and paper code on the question paper before you start writing.

What this is not. This is not a delay or a change to the timetable. The KUPPET union has told its members to stay away from KNEC exam work over examiners' pay and terms, and that dispute was still open this week. The published dates still stand. Candidates should prepare on the official timetable and take updates only from KNEC and their school.

Rehearsal day checklist

Use rehearsal day to settle every practical question before Monday.

Rehearsal day checklist for KCSE 2026 candidates and parents.

  • Identity — confirm your name, index number and registered subjects with the centre.
  • Your room — find your exam room, your seat and where searching happens.
  • Your first paper — write down the date, session and slot of your first oral, practical or written paper.
  • Kit — pens, pencils, ruler, mathematical set and the approved calculator. No phones, notes or smart watches.
  • Travel — day scholars should plan a route that gets them seated by 7.45 a.m.
  • Health — tell the centre now about any medical condition or special needs.
  • Keep this file separate from revision notes, so your timetable and slot details are always easy to find.
  • Refuse anyone selling "leaked" papers, forged materials or paid shortcuts. They are scams and carry serious penalties.

Next step. Today, print or copy your KCSE timetable, circle every paper you sit, and mark any oral or practical slot your school gives you. Then pack your exam kit before Friday's rehearsal.
