KNEC KCSE e-Certificate Portal (October 2026): What Former Candidates and Employers Should Do

KNEC’s e-Certificate portal, ecertificate.knec.ac.ke, lets former KCSE candidates from 1989 to date generate a digital certificate online, and lets employers and institutions verify it. Use only the official portal, have your index number and exam year ready, and confirm the final fee at checkout.

What this means. This is a certificate access and verification service, useful if you lost your paper certificate or must prove your grade to an employer or college. The e-certificate never expires and carries a blockchain verification hash. It currently covers KCSE only; KCPE, TVET, KPSEA and teacher examinations are marked “coming soon”.

Getting your e-certificate

Five steps take you from sign-up to a PDF, as long as your index number and year are correct.

Five steps from registration to download, on the official KNEC portal only.

  • Register — choose “Applicant (Student/Alumni)”, enter your name and email, then the six-digit OTP within 10 minutes.
  • Profile — enter your name as on your National ID, date of birth, phone and ID number. Your identity is checked against IPRS.
  • Exam details — enter the index number (not your ID number), KCSE and the year; two automatic checks follow, identity and certificate lookup.
  • Pay — approve the M-Pesa prompt or use the payment page; confirmation takes 10–30 seconds.
  • Download — save the PDF. It stays downloadable for six months from issue, so keep two secure copies.

For employers, colleges and candidates sharing proof

Verification returns a result from KNEC records, not a judgement from a photocopy.

Verification returns either Genuine or Referred to KNEC; bulk requests take up to 1,000 candidates.

  • Verifier account — organisations register as a Verifier Organization and upload a registration certificate; approval typically takes one business day.
  • Requests — enter index number, exam type, year and name, and upload the certificate PDF. Bulk requests accept up to 1,000 candidates by CSV and ZIP file.
  • Results — “Genuine” or “Referred to KNEC”. A referral means the record could not be confirmed or the tamper check failed, so KNEC follow-up is needed. It is not automatic proof of forgery.
  • Candidate-initiated reports — you can send a verification report straight to an employer, with a consent declaration and a separate payment.

Fees and scam watch

Check the fee on the checkout screen and never pay outside the official portal.

  • Official link — use ecertificate.knec.ac.ke or the E-Certificate link on knec.ac.ke, not links from social media or unknown messages.
  • Fee — the amount is KSh1,200 plus VAT and eCitizen charges, which many applicants report as about KSh1,500 in total. Check the exact amount at checkout and keep your payment confirmation.
  • Name mismatch — if your name changed since you sat KCSE, you may need KNEC’s record-correction procedures first.

What this is not. It is not a results portal for the 2026 KCSE exams. It is not yet available for KCPE, TVET or KPSEA certificates, which the portal lists as coming soon. And it is not a way to change grades or correct records: that goes through KNEC.

Before you apply: checklist

Before you apply: index number, year, email, ID details and the official link.

  • Find your KCSE index number and exam year.
  • Use an email address you can open right now for the OTP.
  • Have your National ID details and phone ready for M-Pesa.
  • Open only ecertificate.knec.ac.ke or the link on knec.ac.ke.
  • Save the PDF in two secure places once downloaded.
  • Keep this file separate from your original certificate and result slip, and note the payment reference.
  • Refuse brokers or “agents” who offer to generate or verify certificates for a fee, or who sell forged documents.

Next step. Today, find your KCSE index number and year, open the official KNEC portal, create your Applicant account and complete your profile. Generate the certificate only when you need it, after checking the fee.
