KUPPET Threatens to Boycott 2026 KCSE Marking: What Teachers, Schools and Candidates Should Do

KUPPET has told its members not to mark the 2026 national examinations until KNEC and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) agree better pay for markers. KCSE starts with the rehearsal on Friday 16 October, so teachers, school heads and candidates should prepare now; sitting the exam is not affected.

Shupavu Education Desk · 11 October 2026

What this means. The dispute is about what markers are paid, not about candidates sitting the papers. KCSE 2026 runs as scheduled for 1,048,355 candidates: rehearsal on Friday 16 October, low-candidature papers from 19 to 30 October and large-candidature papers from 2 to 20 November. On Saturday 10 October, KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori said members will not mark until KNEC and SRC agree improved payment terms, and chairman Omboko Milemba asked SRC to convene talks between KNEC and the union on a payment formula. KNEC holds that marking fees are set in the individual contract each examiner accepts before reporting to a marking centre. The union also points to a teacher deficit of 106,660, against the government commitment to recruit 120,000 teachers by December 2026.

Teachers and examiners: know your terms before you commit

Your marking pay is set in the contract you accept, so read it before you sign.

  • Contract terms — Check the rate per script, allowances, payment mode and payment timeline in your KNEC contracted professional contract. What you accept is what KNEC treats as binding.
  • Union directive — KUPPET members have been told not to take part in marking until a pay deal is reached. Confirm the latest position with your branch officials, not forwarded messages.
  • Other exam roles — Supervision, invigilation and centre management are separate contracts. Check their terms and any union guidance on them separately.
  • Records — Keep copies of past marking payments, any delays and your contract details in case the payment formula changes.
  • Official notices — Follow statements from KNEC, SRC and TSC for any agreed rates.

Four checks for teachers and examiners before accepting a 2026 marking contract.

School heads: protect the exam calendar

The papers will be written on schedule, so the school's job is a calm, well-run exam period.

  • Rehearsal day — Brief every KCSE candidate on Friday 16 October: index numbers, seating, exam rules and what may be carried into the room.
  • Staff plan — List which teachers hold KNEC roles as supervisors, invigilators or examiners, and arrange lesson cover for other classes.
  • Parents' notice — Tell parents in writing that the dispute is about marking pay and that candidates sit as scheduled.
  • Verified updates — Act only on notices from KNEC and the Ministry of Education. Ignore unsigned circulars.

Candidates and parents: keep revising

Nothing in the pay dispute changes the date or the paper a candidate will sit.

  • Your timetable — Mark the rehearsal on 16 October, papers from 19 to 30 October and large papers from 2 to 20 November against your own subjects.
  • Daily revision — Do one timed past paper a day, mark it against the scheme and redo the questions you got wrong.
  • Marking talks — These are between the union, KNEC and SRC. Candidates have nothing to do except prepare and sit their papers.
  • Exam week at home — Parents should protect sleep, meals and a quiet study corner. Late-night cramming does more harm than good.

KCSE 2026 key dates: rehearsal 16 October, low-candidature papers 19–30 October, large papers 2–20 November.

Checklist for this week

  • Teachers — Contract terms read; payment timeline noted.
  • Union members — Latest branch guidance confirmed directly.
  • Heads — Rehearsal briefing set for Friday 16 October; staff exam roles listed; parents' notice sent.
  • Candidates — Personal timetable printed; one timed paper a day.
  • Parents — Quiet study space and exam-week routine at home.
  • Keep this file separate from day-to-day school records: KNEC contracts, appointment letters and payment slips.
  • Refuse anyone selling "leaked" papers, forged appointment letters, brokers promising marking slots or other paid shortcuts.

This week's KCSE checklist for teachers, heads, candidates and parents.

Next step. Today, teachers should open their KNEC contract and note the marking rate and payment timeline; heads should send the rehearsal-day briefing for Friday 16 October to candidates and parents; candidates should sit one timed past paper tonight.
