The long holiday is here. Term 3 closes on 24 October 2026 and schools open for the new year on Monday 4 January 2027. That is more than ten weeks covering late October, November and December. Used well, it is the best time to close learning gaps before the next class. Please confirm the exact closing and opening dates with your child's school, as some schools adjust their calendars.
Why holiday revision matters
Ten weeks without books is long enough for learners to forget a good part of what they covered. A little work every day keeps the knowledge fresh. The aim is not to turn the holiday into another term, but to keep a light, steady routine.
- Short daily routine — 45 to 60 minutes in the morning on one subject is enough for most learners. Older learners can do two blocks.
- Past papers — Do one timed paper or section, then mark it with the marking scheme and redo the questions that were wrong.
- Rest balance — Chores, play, outdoor time and family events are part of a good holiday. A rested child learns better in January.

A short daily holiday routine: one study block, a timed past paper, corrections, then rest.
Teachers: send learners home with structured assignments
Before closing on 24 October, give each class a clear holiday package rather than a loose list of pages.
- Weekly plan — Break the work into weeks so learners and parents can track progress.
- Clear instructions — State the topics, the number of questions and how answers should be presented.
- Marking schemes — Where possible, share answers for self-marking so learners can correct themselves at home.
- Collection date — Tell learners the work will be checked in the first week of January 2027.
Parents: monitor the holiday work
You do not need to be a teacher to keep your child on track. A few simple habits help a lot.
- Check weekly — Every weekend, look through what was done that week.
- Sign off — Sign or date completed work so the teacher can see it was checked at home.
- Limit screen time — Agree on phone, TV and gaming hours, and keep devices out of the study corner.
- Talk to teachers — If your child is stuck or the work is unclear, contact the class teacher early rather than in January.

A weekly checklist parents can use to monitor holiday assignments.
Have a restful holiday, and see you in January 2027.
